The Korean New Year is mostly a celebration of families' ancestors. This day is celebrated on two different days according to the lunar and solar calendars. The official date is January 1, but some Koreans celebrate it according to the lunar calender. If so, there is a different day each year according to the zodiac sign.

Why and how is it celebrated?
In the morning they have a special breakfast followed by a ceremony. The ceremony is called the “Charye” to honor their ancestors. They arrange an altar table carefully laid out with special foods. The leader of the family does a ritual, while someone else reads the “chuk mun” a list of the ancestors’ names. After that, the children perform a Sebae, the year’s first formal greeting. The children bow deeply to their parent and their grandparents, and say, “Say hay boke-mahn he pah du say oh”, which means “Please receive New Year’s blessings”. The kids receive treats and enjoy an elaborate breakfast. Koreans celebrate the official New Year’s Day, January 1, as well as the tradition lunar New Year’s Day. On this special day what they do is prepare special foods and clean their houses. The things that they do during the day are visit with neighbors, play games, do fortune-telling, and have dancing. The Korean Lunar New Year, known as Seol, is celebrated on the first day of the first month of the new lunar year.
